ABOUT

Original Music / New Ideas (OM/NI) is a new EPSMF Competition launched nationally in 2017 for classical composers in the Junior Division (ages 9 to 16) and Emerging Composer Division (ages 17 to 25). OM/NI fills a niche that provides young composers an opportunity to share original music. Finalists will be published in an “OM/NI New Works Compilation” and featured in the OM/NI Composition Showcase scheduled for August 2020 in the Sounds of St. Mark’s Series. Awards include cash prizes for the top 3 entries in each category. All Finalists are eligible for an Audience Choice Award.

Competition Instrumentation History

2018 - Solo Piano I

2019 - Solo Piano II

2020 - Flute (solo or accompanied)

2021 - Violin, Viola, or Cello (solo or accompanied)

How To Apply

Below, you'll find everything you need to learn about OM/NI, view sample scores, links to submit your composition, process your entry fee, or order the "OM/NI New Music" Compilation or CD after it's released!

If you have any questions about the program or need help, please contact sjackson@epsmf.org.

Each eligible score received by the deadline will be evaluated by the OM/NI Panel at EPSMF in collaboration with the guest artists for the 2020 concert.

Preference will be given to scores demonstrating idiomatic understanding of Flute and Piano (if using) writing, clear presentation/development of materials - both harmonic and melodic, well-edited and legible notation. Any use of extended technique should be accessible to a typical concert pianist and clearly explained within the context of the score.

Entries may draw from any style of concert music, but must demonstrate a solid use of compositional technique as well as a good understanding of the instrument.

Competition Concert - Depending on the entries received, two to eight string players and any additional required pianists will prepare all of the concert repertory for presentation during a concert in collaboration with the Sounds of St. Mark's Concert Series. Composers are welcome to attend the performance, but are not required to do so. Should they choose to attend, any fees incurred for travel, lodging or meals are the sole responsibility of the composer. When possible, EPSMF will try to find in home hospitality for visiting composers. Due to Covid, finalist concert may need to be presented in a streaming format depending on the healthy and safety guidelines at the time of the event.

Audience Choice Award - At this time, the audience will also vote for Audience Choice award recipient. The Audience Choice Prize is $200.00.

Publication/Recording - All compositions selected for inclusion in the OM/NI Concert will be included in a print publication "OM/NI New Music" Compilation. The concert is also recorded live and each composer will receive an mp3 of their composition after the performance. Compositions selected for publication will receive royalties from Compilation and CD sales.

A separate contract (to be signed by parents or guardians for anyone under 18) will be sent to each composer prior to publication. Contract is non-exclusive. EPSMF reserves the right to republish or include compositions for performance in concert for a period not to exceed (five) years from the date of submission.
